The Atelier

Our studio is both workspace and archive, where historical equipment meets contemporary practice.

The Space

The studio occupies a renovated industrial space, chosen for its natural light and room to accommodate multiple presses. The layout prioritizes workflow: design area transitions into plate-making, which feeds into printing, then finishing.

Equipment is arranged to support efficient movement while maintaining safety. Each press has sufficient clearance for operation and maintenance. Storage for type, paper, and finished work is organized and accessible.

The Presses

We maintain several letterpress machines, each suited to different formats and production volumes. The oldest dates to the early twentieth century, restored to working condition through careful maintenance and replacement of worn parts.

Regular maintenance is essential. Machines are cleaned, lubricated, and adjusted according to manufacturer specifications and our experience with their operation. Some repairs require custom fabrication or sourcing of vintage parts.

Daily Practice

A typical day begins with reviewing work in progress and planning the day's tasks. Printing sessions require preparation: mixing ink, setting type or mounting plates, cutting paper to size, and adjusting press settings.

During printing, attention to detail is constant. Each sheet is inspected as it comes off the press. Registration, ink coverage, and overall quality are monitored continuously. Adjustments are made as needed.

Between printing sessions, we handle design work, plate-making, material ordering, and administrative tasks. The pace is deliberate, allowing time for each step to be completed thoughtfully.

Visiting the Studio

We welcome studio visits by appointment. Seeing the process in person helps explain the time and attention required for each piece. Visitors can observe printing, examine finished work, and discuss custom projects.

Appointments allow us to set aside dedicated time for discussion and demonstration. We ask that visitors respect the working environment and understand that some equipment may be in use during visits.

Workspace Organization

The studio is organized to support efficient workflow while maintaining a calm, focused atmosphere. Each area serves a specific purpose: design and planning, plate preparation, printing, and finishing.

Tools and materials are stored systematically, allowing quick access when needed. This organization reduces time spent searching for items and contributes to a smooth production process.

Equipment Heritage

Many of our presses have decades of history behind them. We maintain and restore vintage equipment, preserving both the machines and the knowledge required to operate them.

This connection to printing history informs our work and provides access to techniques and capabilities that modern equipment may not offer.
